But behind the striking gingham dresses and statement collars is a story about doing things differently.
Born from a Need for Change Damson Madder was founded in the spring of 2020 by Emma Hill. After years of working behind the scenes in the fashion industry, Emma grew disillusioned with the standard practices of mass production. She wanted to focus on something slower, more considered, and more responsible, but where innovative and exciting design was still the driving force.
Fun fact: The brand actually got its name during early fabric trials. While experimenting with natural dyes, two of the team’s favorite rich shades were 'Damson' (a deep plum) and 'Madder' (a vibrant flowering plant). Thus, it became Damson Madder!
The Philosophy: Design First, Responsibility Always A lot of brands treat sustainability as an afterthought. For Damson Madder, it’s the starting point. They focus strictly on lower-impact materials built to last, prioritizing plant-based, organic, and recycled fibers like certified organic cotton, linen, and innovative pulp fibers. In fact, virgin synthetics make up less than 5% of their entire production, a number they work to lower every single year.
But what makes Damson Madder truly special is that these garments don’t look like typical eco-wear. They are playful, full of character, and intentionally designed to be worn, loved, and passed down—never destined for a landfill.
Small Batches, Slow Fashion Instead of flooding the market with massive, continuous seasonal lines, Damson Madder operates on a slow, deliberate schedule. In fact, every single piece begins its journey 12 to 18 months before it ever reaches your wardrobe.
They work slowly and deliberately to refine designs, perfect the fit, and nurture long-term relationships with their factories and suppliers. This "small-batch" and transparent production model ensure they minimize waste, focusing on timeless form and function rather than chasing fast-moving trends.
